The Upstander 5K Dr. Al Miller Resilience Award honors a runner or walker in the Upstander 5K who exemplifies perseverance, dedication, and a love of physical fitness. A Holocaust survivor and U.S. Army veteran, Dr. Al Miller overcame unimaginable adversity and carried his resilience into every aspect of his life—including his passion for movement. An avid runner and walker, he believed in the power of physical fitness to build strength and resilience. Well into his later years, he remained active, walking several miles every day until the age of 100.

This award recognizes individuals who, like Al, have faced challenges—whether physical, personal, or emotional—yet continue to move forward. It celebrates those who embody his unbreakable spirit, demonstrating that running and walking are more than just physical activities; they are acts of perseverance, courage, and a testament to the power of resilience.

The winner will be announced on May 15, and they will be recognized before the start of the Upstander 5K on June 29, 2025, at historic Union Terminal. Register today.
